SafeHarbor
Child Advocacy Center, Inc., a newly
organizing nonprofit organization
that will serve child victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect in
the counties of Cocke, Grainger, Jefferson and Sevier, recently received
notice from the National Children’s Alliance (NCA) of their selection
to receive three separate startup grants.
Barry Fain, a charter member of the board of directors, as well as
the board’s treasurer, commented, “We knew that we would qualify
for some initial startup money from NCA. But, I am pleasantly surprised
that it was this much!” NCA awarded SafeHarbor a total of
$95,498.00 in program specific
grant funding.
Donna Koester,
also a charter member and president of the board of directors, stated,
“I am rarely speechless. But, as I was opening each e-mail
notification, not knowing what to expect, I could not believe my
eyes!” The first NCA grant totaled $5,000.00. The second
grant amounted to $40,498.00. And, the third and final startup grant
came to an even $50,000.00. The monies obtained through these awards
are earmarked for specific program
services to be provided by SafeHarbor.
Koester
concluded, “I kept thinking I was dreaming! I quickly sent out an
e-mail to Barry [Fain] and the other board members, along with a follow-up
phone call of the news we had gotten.” Fain concluded, “We
are still trying to let it all sink in that we received this much in initial
grant funding from the National Children’s Alliance. This
reassures us that we can make this undertaking for a CAC a reality to serve
child-victims of abuse in our district.”
SafeHarbor
Child Advocacy Center, Inc. will provide a central point of service for
child-victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse and severe neglect in the
four-county district. The center will aid in coordinating and
conducting investigative efforts to ascertain facts of the case and, if appropriate, build a more solid case for prosecution of perpetrators. In addition,
they will help coordinate the follow-up counseling to help the child-victim
and non-offending family members past this point of severe trauma.
